“That is ironic,” Miyagi immediately replied. His expression finally transitioning from neutral to a welcoming one; he was even smiling a little, the bit of delight doing wonders for his normally dark eyes. He then leaned back in his chair, smoothing long fingers against the back of his neck in a sheepish manner ━ and also because he couldn’t believe he’d done all that wondering for nothing. To think he’d been ready to pull hairs.

“You’re right though. I’m afraid we haven’t met before.” His arms settled back against the table again and noticing ashes were building at the very tip of his cigarette, he tapped them out before continuing his speech. “I’m Miyagi. Literature professor,”

A brief pause to inhale a much-needed drag.

“The work you do must be tough with deadlines and all.”

And yet another exhale of cloudy fumes.

Not knowing how to respond, Takano slowly nodded his head as he set his book down onto the table. As he took in the scent of the nicotine filled air, the editor felt his pulse hitch; his desire to smoke rising. The man felt himself giving into the temptation as his hand slowly slipped into his pocket, grabbing his cigarette pack.  With one final sigh, Takano gave in–taking one cigarette from the pack and placing it between his lips as he lighted it in the process. As he took a drag, the editor felt his lungs expanding; his cravings finally satisfied as he leaned back into his seat. Stagnant eyes were glued onto the male before him, despite the short smoke intersession.

“Miyagi, huh? Takano. My name is
                          Takano Masamune. A pleasure to
                          meet you. Literatue professor, you
say? Well, sir, I applaud you for
                          taking such a position. Teaching
                          our future professors and writers
as well as preparing them for the
real world. Takes a lot of skill.”

Taking another hit, Takano could only laugh at the other’s words. Miyagi wasn’t exactly far from the truth, but deadlines weren’t exactly a problem for the editor. Two fingers pinched the middle of the cigarette and smothered the flame onto the nearby ash tray as Takano reached for another one in his pocket. Just thinking about his schedule was too much for him to even comprehend during his break.

“It’s not as bad as you think. While
it definitely is a hassle, the hardest
thing about being an editor is trying
to cooperate with the artists them-
                            selves. They’re the reasons why
                                    deadlines can’t be met.”
